Time is one of the main culprits for people not attaining their fitness goals. What if I told you that you could get in shape without even going to the gym. Yes, it is possible. I have helped several clients get in shape from the comfort of their home, with and without any fitness equipment. The key lies in a few important factors to take into account when training at home:
- Make it quick – This is the most important quality of a successful at home workout. Working out at home will make you susceptible to a lot of distractions, from kids, to television, to trying to prepare dinner and on…So when you decide to work out at home, dedicate the full 20 minutes to your workout. If programmed properly, your 20 minute workouts can yield great results. More importantly, you’re more likely to complete a 20 minute at home workout as opposed to a 60+ minute workout.
- Go hard – As mentioned earlier, we will be keeping at-home workouts short and to the point. This means we need to go hard, very hard! For short workouts to be effective, we must really push ourselves, however, proper programming for the workout is key if we want to reach high intensities without burning out.
- Train often – Since at-home workouts are meant to be intense and short, don’t hold yourself to a strict workout schedule. If you notice you have 15-20min of spare time on your hands, don’t think twice and treat yourself to a quick workout. That’s the benefit of at-home workouts, you don’t need to drive to and from the gym and put aside 2 hours of your day for a workout, simply take 20 minutes a few times week and have at it!
- Optional, but optimal! Have the proper equipment – Having fitness equipment is not a requirement, but it can definitely spice things up a bit and add variety to at-home workouts. My personal favorite tools for at-home workouts are the TRX suspension trainer and kettlebells. They are simple and effective tools, and when used properly they can add tremendous variety to the workouts and quickly yield results.
There you have it, no excuses now! Even if you don’t have time to go to a gym you can still get in shape. Remember to keep your workouts short and intense and aim for at least 3 workouts per week.
