“Social drinking” is a phrase that refers to casual drinking in a social setting like happy hour. Even if you don’t want or like to drink the pressure get a drink in these settings is high. However if you’re on a weight loss journey one of the biggest and easiest things you can do to cut calories is to reduce your alcohol consumption. Cocktails – especially when made with sugary juices or mixers contain a lot of calories that add up quickly during a night out. I’ve been in the fitness field for a long time and so my friends have stopped bugging me to have a drink but I know that for those first starting out on their health journeys they may not have friends or coworkers that are as supportive. Of course you could always explain to everyone why you’re not drinking but that can get old pretty fast so it is just easier to fake it 😉
Here’s what I do, which will hopefully help you out next time you’re out! When I go out I order a Perrier with lemon wedge/juice. That’s it! It looks like an alcoholic drink but with zero calories and no sugar! If you’re not a fan of lemon you can ask the bartender if they have other fruits to meddle with your Perrier. You’ll be saving yourself a lot of empty calories in the long run, not to mention money on expensive drinks at the bar, and be the responsible sober party-er to drive yourself home with no worries!
A delicious combo that I got to try at a Perrier event last night at the amazing rooftop – The Square – Movenpick was cucumber and mint! Of course it was even better since it was served out of this funky mechanism! 🙂
Proper hydration is key to optimal health — and water should of course be your go-to drink of choice. I have a 2.2 L bottle that I fill up in the AM and then again in the afternoon. This way I can easily measure just how much water I have had, and how much more I need to drink that day. The benefits of drinking enough water daily are too numerous to count, but the highlights are promoting optimal joint and muscle function, maintaining healthy skin, cleansing your body and keeping your eyes moist. The last one may seem odd but since most of us work in air conditioned offices and spend the day staring at computers we need to make sure that our eyes are kept moist!
Most of the time drinking enough water is a fool proof plan. However I do get cravings like everyone and water doesn’t always cut it. That’s when I reach for a sparkling water, like Perrier, it’s high in minerals and free from sugar and artificial sweeteners, flavorings and colors. They do sell flavored varieties of Perrier like lemon, lime, and grapefruit BUT they are flavored with essential oils — so all the flavor but no sugar! I personally had never tried or even thought of adding grapefruit but I got to try it at the event and it was really yummy!
