If you’ve been to the movie theaters recently chances are you’ve probably seen the trailer for “Creed”a new spinoff of the Rocky series. It’s a new boxing movie where Sylvester Stallone’s character, Rocky Balboa, trains the son of Apollo Creed, Adonis Creed, played by Michael B Jordan. Apollo Johnson is the boxer that rivaled Rocky in the first Rocky movie which was released almost 40 years ago, in 1976!
Much like Jake Gyllenahaal’s training for “Southpaw”, another recent movie about boxing (which you can read about HERE) Jordan also had to go through some intense training to prepare for his role. Jordan worked with pro boxers to not only learn, but perfect his movements and in-ring performance. He even checked out boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather when he was training for a fight. It seems like he was really immersing himself in the culture of boxing to get into character.
During an interview Jordan emphasized that his nutrition was just as important as his training. “I ate so much grilled chicken and brown rice and broccoli. Training two or three times a day. Drinking a gallon and a half of water every day,” Jordan said. He also added that he ate between 6-7 meals per day! All that food must have helped him gain the 24 lbs (almost 11 kgs) of muscle that he put on for this role! I mean, check out those muscles!!
It wasn’t until he put on Apollo Creed’s signature red, white and blue boxing trunks that he felt the magnitude of his role. For those that have watched all 6 Rocky movies are familiar with Apollo- he is portrayed as a magnificent boxer- a titan in the sport- until he died at the hands of Russian boxer Ivan in “Rocky IV”. There are a lot of references and tributes to the original Rocky movies like the scenes below of Stallone and Jordan jogging through the streets.
Creed comes out on November 25, 2015 in the USA with an international release coming soon after. Check out the trailer below and let us know if you’re excited about this movie!!
