If you live or travelled in any major city you’ve heard of the latest trend, Poke bowls. Poke is the Hawaiian verb for “section” or “to slice or cut” and its actually been around for several decades! It started out as a snack made by fisherman and has evolved into a more complex fish “salad” and a dish that’s totally beautiful for Instagram! 😀 Now Beirut can consider itself on trend as the first Poke bar has now opened in Gemmayze.
Nestled in a little side street, we were warmly greeted and explained not only the concept of the restaurant but also a little about the history. The options are endless with several different types of proteins, bases, toppings, and sauces to choose from! If you’re not feeling creative that day you can always try one of their pre-made bowls or delicious ceviche. If you’re not familiar with ceviche, it is raw fish that has been left for 24 hours to cure in citrus juices and some spice! We loved this!
The concept is very much a health-oriented approach to food as all of the ingredients are fresh and the dishes will leave you feeling full but light. It’s a great place to stop by for lunch, dinner, or even a snack! Go ahead and enjoy your poke bowl, and make sure to tag them on Facebook or Instagram! As each dish is custom-made it does take a bit of time, so make sure to go early and try to grab a seat before making your bowl! Smaller groups are recommended as the space is a little tight. As the weather gets better it will be great if you can take your bowl outside and enjoy it under the sun. Maybe if you close your eyes you can even pretend that you’re in Hawaii enjoying your poke bowl at the beach…maybe!
